Our March 19, 2019 ASSP South Plains Chapter hosted a luncheon meeting with Erica McDowell, Lubbock District Coordinator for the Texas Department of Emergency Management (TDEM). The luncheon was sponsored by Texas Mutual’s WorkSafe Texas Summit on April 30.

We also had another special guest attend our meeting ASSP Region III North Area Director Stephanie Johnson, CSP, CHMM. Stephanie is the EHS Area Manager for AT&T Services in Dallas and serves an important position for our Region. Thank you Stephanie for participating in our meeting.

Thank you for participating in our Gun Safe Raffle!

Our South Plains Chapter held it’s first fund raiser, a Gun Safe Raffle at our November 20, 2018 meeting.

**We would like to congratulate our winner – Jason Haggard.

Jason won a Bighorn 19.1 cubic foot gun safe which had a list price of $799.99.

The cost of each raffle tickets was $10 and we were able to sell 90 tickets.

Thank you to everyone that purchased tickets to assist us in this fund raiser, with special thanks to our organizers, Sean Finkbone, Ben Maldonado, Cricket McWilliams, and Martha Siller.

The ASSP South Plains Chapter is a 501(c) tax-exempt, nonprofit organization that has been in existence for over three years and may hold a raffle in Texas under Charitable Raffle Enabling Act (CREA).  According to CREA Sec. 2002.053, all of the proceeds from the sale of tickets will be spent for charitable purposes.  This raffle is not sponsored by an Individual or by a for-profit business.

Erica McDowell, District Coordinator with the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) was the special guest speaker at the Lubbock County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) meeting on November 1.  Approximately 50 local safety and emergency managers, police, fire and community stakeholders were in attendance.

After an introduction from LEPC Chair and Lubbock County Emergency Management Coordinator, Clinton Thetford, Erica began her presentation by posing a question to the audience, “What if your internet connection goes down, are you prepared?”

She emphasized the importance of being prepared not only for individuals and families but also for businesses.  Businesses should have a Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP).

COOP is a best practice for all businesses. Organizations that have a COOP are better prepared for emergencies, including localized acts of nature, accidents, terrorist attacks and technological emergencies, such as not having an internet connection which can cause significant business interruption.
